John Wayne the son of a pharmacist Clyde Morrison, John started out with the name Marion Robert Morrison. After moving to a warmer climate, Southern California and giving ranching a try and failing in the Mojave desert they moved to Glendale California. Marion delivered medicines for his father, sold newspapers. It is believed that the Airdale dog he had named Duke was the source of his nickname. Marion did well in school academically and at football. He went to U.S.C. On a football scholarship after narrowly failing admission to Annapolis. Tom Mix Helped to get Marion a summer job in a movie studio as a propman and in exchange Marion would get Mix football tickets. It is believed this is the time he became close friends with John Ford. Around this time Marion started doing bit parts, some billed as John Wayne. It is said that Man Without Women in 1930 what John Wayne's first featured film. After about 70 or so low budget films John's career was not going anywhere until he was cast in the film Stagecoach by John Ford in 1939. From their he went on to appear in nearly 250 movies. Note: John Wayne is by far my favorite actor, he made many great movies but his westerns were my favorite with his war movies a close second. In his westerns the Fast Draw and gunhandling scenes were made to look easy. He did many of those scenes himself without a stand in.
